Writing Challenge #1 - Lost Within - Part 2

So a few days ago I challenged my readers and I to write a short piece based on a scene I set.  If you haven't seen the this post you can find it here.

The genre of the scene was intentionally left quite vague to allow for a variety of responses in terms of writing style.  Because of this it took me a little while to finalise where I wanted my story to go, I had a few different ideas but settled on the idea below idea.

I've decided to post my response over two posts mainly because I haven't finished it.  This truly has been a challenge for me, writing in first person is a completely new aspect of writing that I haven't explored before so I have to say that you really shouldn't expect miracles in what you are about to read.  I'm confident that there are a lot of people that are far better than me when it comes to writing in first person and I'd love for you to post your stories in the comments below.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.  Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Lost Within - Part 2
...I can feel my heart pounding in my chest and the sound of my pulse ringing in my ears.  My body tenses as adrenaline courses through my veins forcing me to decide fight or run.  My mind kicks in and makes the decision for me, there's nowhere to run, all that is behind me is the labyrinth of tunnels that has no exit.  I know this nightmare won't end until either one of us is dead.

I walk forward into the opening and find myself stood at the edge of an arena.  The only way I can describe it is that it's like something out of a history book, what I imagine Rome's Colosseum to be like.  In the centre is a large cage, the ground is stained with what can only be blood, How many people have died here?  The thought of it sends a cold shiver down my spine.

"Welcome Challengers!" a voice echoed through the arena, "congratulations to making it to to our grand finale.  Gather your strength and prepare to fight, we will begin shortly."  The sound faded with an audible click.

I scan the area to find a mass of weapons propped against the sides of the cage. The figure opposite me starts to move frantically, picking and choosing his weapons of choice, testing them as he goes.  I will my feet to move knowing I should be doing the same, but it is with a heavy heart that I arm myself with daggers and short swords, everything else seems too heavy for me to carry let alone swing.  I see him picking up large weapons; he has already adorned himself with an axe strapped to his back, a long sword on his hip and a club in his hand.  I know I can't win with brute strength, he's twice my size and I'm...well I'm just me.

"Challengers, the time has come to fight for your freedom.  Ladies and gentlemen, sit back and enjoy tonight's event."

I look around to find the carved stone seats have begun to fill with a masked audience, here to see the fight.  I hadn't notice them arriving while I was choosing my weapons but the auditorium was now filling up, there must be two hundred people taking their seats.

"Open the gates!"

Two gates swung open either side of the arena and my opponent stepped forward.  What else can I do?  I have to fight, right?  I have to at least try to win my freedom, I deserve it just as much as anybody else.  I take one last look around and step through the gate but not before strapping on a pair of gauntlets and grabbing a small leather bound shield.

"Ladies and gentleman, after a long series we come to the grand finale between our returning challenger who thrives on blood lust and the thrill of the chase and our new challenger who has only managed to make one kill so far."

My stomach turns as I'm forced to recall the kill I made in the tunnels, it was do or die, she came at me and I had to do it.  I thought bumping in to another girl might have been a good thing, that we could help each other get through this but you was crazed with desperation.

"Challengers, begin!"  The words echo through the arena...

NaNo Prep 2018 Begins

So if you don't know about NaNoWriMo and you want to be a writer you have to check it out.  It is an annual, community writing event where writers of all levels come together to challenge themselves to achieve a predetermined word count between 1 - 30 November.  Every year this begins in September with NaNo Prep, the organisers of NaNoWriMo provide us with a lot of writing resources and challenges on the run up to November so that when we hit Day 1 of the challenge we should have a plot ready to go and can focus on writing every day to hit our word count. Make sure you check it out here:  https://www.nanowrimo.org One thing I must say; don't be disheartened if you don't hit your word count.  NaNo is a difficult challenge, especially if you haven't attempted it before - I myself have failed to hit my word count on a few attempts.  Regardless of your word count you should end the month with something that you can work with, whether that is four chapters or fourteen cha
