How to plan a novel with Microsoft Excel

So I am taking a day off from the daily posts to bring you H ow to plan a novel with Microsoft Excel .  This is a new concept to me which I came across just a few weeks ago, in my day to day work I use Microsoft Excel extensively and - from what I have seen - it seems like a highly efficient and structured way to keep your novel on track. Source I have seen many different formats during my research of this planning method and I am currently working on a template which I am hoping to bring to you tomorrow - available for free download.  This seems to work well for people who like to write from a detailed plan opposed to those that fly by the seat of their pants and end up with a novel. I want the document to include the following tabs: Scenes Characters Places Timeline Other I'm going to be having a think about it tomorrow and finalise my template for you all to use so make sure you check back here and give it a go. Word of the Day #9 - Iron

The word of the day is:  Iron Iron is a noun, defined as - a strong, hard magnetic silvery-grey metal, the chemical element of atomic number 26, much used as a material for construction and manufacturing, especially in the form of steel. Or, a tool or implement now or originally made from iron. Iron is also a verb, defined as - to smooth with an iron. I try to practice my descriptive skills by describing landscapes, scenery, everyday things.  For me, especially when it comes to fantasy fiction, there is nothing more satisfying than writing or reading a few paragraphs of scene setting description. Source Challenge To describe iron.  Think about its colour, texture, temperature etc.  Try and think of all of its attributes and use your knowledge of language to emphasise its characteristics and traits. Writing Prompt #8 - Lost in the Woods

I find that there is no better way for characters to set out on an adventure than to journey though a mysterious forest - or any forest for that matter.  J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Rin g - following the inciting incident - has the Hobbits journeying through a forest when the Ring Wraiths come looking for the ring. Source A forest is a great source of atmosphere, so many things can realistically happen in a forest that your story can be out of this world and relatable at the same time.  Fog can roll off a nearby river or stream, monsters can be hidden in its shadows, the trees can be alive with the creatures crawling across their limbs. Challenge To create a forest that can harbour a story that is full of suspense.  Adjectives are going to be crucial in this challenge as it is the descriptive power of words that give your creations their feeling.
